Celebrating the arrival of spring, Holi (also called Holika or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries such as India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and the United States. Members of the region’s Indian community will share the epic story behind the festival and lead a lesson in dandiya stick dancing. Food will be available from Royal Spice Restaurant for sale. At 12:30 families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other. It is recommended that participants wear old clothes and dress warmly. This event is possible thanks to the support of Savings Bank of Walpole and Tree Free Greetings. Holi is a collaboration between the Keene India Association, Historical Society of Cheshire County, and the city of Keene’s Human Rights Committee.
